Northwest Fire District firefighters were called to the area of Marana and I-10 just after 1:00pm on Saturday when multiple reports of a trailer fire were called into 9-1-1.
The first engine company arrived within 6 minutes to find a single wide mobile home 80% involved in fire. Based on information from neighbors that this home was an abandoned structure, crews began a defensive attack to stop the fire from spreading to neighboring homes. The fire was stopped within several feet of the house next door.
Firefighters did not enter the building based on the amount of fire and the hazards from a roof top mounted swamp cooler. This decision proved to be very accurate as the cooler unit fell into the building as the firefighting operation began.
Had crews been inside the building to fight the fire, there could have been significant injuries.
26 firefighter’s brought the fire under control within 21 minutes after their arrival.
A neighbor was injured when he attempted to fight the fire prior to the arrival of the fire department. He suffered a minor injury and was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. A firefighter also was treated and transported by ground ambulance after receiving minor burns while fighting the fire.
Investigators were at the scene to determine the cause of the fire. At this time, that investigation is still ongoing. The trailer is a total loss and no dollar amounts were available.
