Public Health Conference in Tucson April 27

The Arizona Public Health Association is proud to announce the 2012 annual spring conference, “Mental Illness Stigma: Let’s Overcome It.”

Through the lens of public and behavioral health, conference attendees will learn approaches and innovative programs to address and reduce mental illness stigma; gain insight into the impact of mental illness stigma on individuals and families; and develop strategies for improving programs, communication, policies and environments to reduce mental illness stigma.

The keynote speaker Jon Perez, the regional administrator for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, is a nationally recognized clinical psychologist with more than 20 years of federal service.

The Arizona Public Health Association will also welcome former District Director for U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Ron Barber, as a presenter.  Barber will help conference attendees understand the personal and community-wide impact of the tragic event that occurred in Tucson on Jan. 8, 2011.

The conference takes place Friday, April 27, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, 2502 N. Dodge Blvd. in Tucson.

Registration is $100 for AzPHA Members, or $135 for non members; register online at

The conference fee includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and informational handouts.

Mental Illness Stigma: Let’s Overcome it is also supported, in part, by the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, Optum and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, Magellan Health Services of Arizona, People of Color Network, Arizona Council of Human Service Providers, Behavioral Health Coalition of Southern Arizona, and Crisis Response Network of Southern Arizona.  There will also be a variety of exhibitors on hand for attendees to visit and learn more information.
