The Explorer Newspaper took second place for overall General Excellence during the annual Arizona Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest. In all, The Explorer finished with 15 awards, which were announced on Sept. 14 in Phoenix.

Explorer photographer Randy Metcalf earned three first place awards, taking the top spot for Best News Photograph, Best Feature Photograph and Best Feature Photo Layout. Metcalf also took second place for Best Feature Photograph, and a third-place award for Best Feature Photo Layout and Best Sports Photograph.

Explorer reporter Chris Flora won first place for Best Headline, “Marana covering its assets”.

Production Manager Brandon Hays won two third place awards for ad design.

In general newspaper categories, The Explorer won second place honors for Departmental News Coverage and Copy Writing Excellence and Best Use of Photography.

The Explorer won third-place honors for Best Special Section (Discover the Northwest), Editorial Page Excellence and Best Website.

“The Explorer staff continues to work hard to cover the news and events of the Northwest,” said Managing Editor Thelma Grimes. “This staff deserves the recognition and we only look to continue to improve.”
