On Dec. 8, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint at Palo Verde Road and Aviation Parkway as part of the holiday season DUI enforcement efforts. At approximately 10:30 p.m., a white pickup truck came through the checkpoint and deputies immediately noticed a large amount of blood on the driver’s side door. Inside the vehicle were the female driver, later identified as 42-year-old Rebecca M. Gomez, the 57-year-old male passenger and two female teenagers, none of whom was wearing a seatbelt.

Deputies described that the male passenger was covering the back of his head and his ear with his right hand. They saw blood dripping from his arm and began to investigate. During this investigation, they learned the male had been in an altercation within city limits, and during that incident he was stabbed causing the wound to his head. When the male was removed from the vehicle for further evaluation, deputies found several other stab wounds to his body and began to administer first aid by using their Individual First Aid Kits (IFAKs). Rural Metro Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the male to University of Arizona Medical Center for further treatment. Detectives with the Tucson Police Department responded to the checkpoint to take over the investigation of the stabbing incident.

While talking with the female driver in order to get her side of the story, deputies noted an odor of intoxicants emanating from her breath. When they checked her driver’s license record they also found that her driving privileges had been revoked due to a previous DUI conviction. The two teenage passengers in the vehicle were identified as Gomez’ daughters. Deputies continued their investigation and developed probable cause to arrest her for driving under the influence.

Rebecca Gomez was arrested for two counts of Child Abuse (felony 4) and one count of Aggravated DUI for Driving Under The Influence While Driving on a Suspended or Revoked Driver’s License Suspended or Revoked For DUI (felony 4). Gomez was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center.
