It's been a good season so far for the Lady Nighthawks. The team qualified to compete in the state championship, anchored by junior Adrianna Grijalva, above, who established a season record 45-foot putt.

Just three weeks into the 2011 season, the Ironwood Ridge High School Lady Nighthawks' varsity golf team has captured its fifth qualifying team score to earn a spot in the Division II State Championships.

Based on the current Arizona Interscholastic Association list of qualifiers, Ironwood Ridge is the first team to have five competitors qualify for state this season.

Junior Adrianna Grijalva led the way last week as the overall first-place medalist for two matches at the Omni Tucson National.

In addition, she dazzled everyone with her 45-foot putt on the 13th hole of the Catalina Course.

Senior Ellen Springs, who was an overall first-place medalist in matches two weeks ago, tied for second, two strokes behind Grijalva, along with freshman Victoria Browning, in both matches.

Kenzie Rogers also tied for second in a Sept. 13 match. Freshman Sydney Colwill stepped up her game as a new golfer, earning a qualifying score at Tucson National in the fourth spot.

Amanda Madlangbayan also played in the fifth alternate spot, and even though the fifth golfer's score is not included in the team score, all five Lady Nighthawks had the best scores of the match against Flowing Wells.
