AARP presents driving refresher classes at OVPD

AARP driver-safety classes will be presented on Oct. 28 and Dec. 2 at the Oro Valley Police Department, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers who are age 50 and older. It has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today's roads for 25 years.

Many insurance companies offer a discount to drivers who have completed the course.

The fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

Explorer honored by newspaper association

Work by The Explorer Newspaper's production and editorial teams was recognized by the Arizona Newspapers Association as part of its 2011 Better Newspapers Contest.

The Explorer received third place for its year-round coverage of community news in the General Excellence category for non-daily newspapers with a circulation greater than 10,000.

Managing Editor Wendy Miller received a first-place award in the Best Headline category, while the paper's production team of Brandon Hays and Yaron Yarden received a first-place award for Page Design Excellence.

Freelance photographer Don Boorse received first place in the Best Feature Photograph category. Staff photographer Randy Metcalf was honored twice, receiving a second-place award for Best Feature Photograph and a third-place award for Best Sports Photograph.

The paper received a third-place award for its overall Best Use of Photography.

The awards were announced on Oct. 15 in Scottsdale.
