Scott Mahan is a senior at Ironwood Ridge High School and was recently named a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Mahan is taking six Advanced Placement classes: Literature, Calculus, U.S. Government and Politics, Spanish, Economics and Environmental Science. He also has a love for music, which began in the first grade when he started playing piano. 

Since that time, he’s been playing trumpet in jazz band, marching band and he’s now learning to play the mandolin. 

Mahan is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and National Honor Society, and he is also an Eagle Scout with more than 150 hours of community service.

Mahan was recognized for the Oro Valley’s Spotlight on Youth during the Sept. 18 council meeting.
