A good-sized crowd braved the sun and heat on March 31 to support the athletes participating in the Coronado Area Track & Field competition held at Amphi High School. More than 480 Special Olympics athletes from Tucson and southern Arizona representing 20 area delegations came out to compete in the event.

The athletes were joined by over 500 volunteers from Davis Monthan AFB, the Air National Guard, Army National Guard, Tucson Police Department, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, GEICO, Ratheon, student groups from the University of Arizona and local volunteers.

Sponsors of the events included: The Tucson Conquistadores, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Southern Arizona, Foundations, Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, GEICO and EEGEE’S. The Support and encouragement shown on behalf of the families, sponsors and volunteers was nothing short of amazing.  If an event could be measured by the roar of the crowd, then the Special Olympics event was certainly a success. The Bleachers were full of families and spectators who came out to cheer on the athletes.

Athletes of nearly all ages and all ability levels did their best in hopes of earning a medal for all of their hard work. The day certainly represented the Special Olympics athlete oath: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” The strength and heart that each of the 480 athletes demonstrated was inspiring and each one of them had something to be proud of that day.
