Pima County Sheriff's Department to hold Dispose-A-Med

In 2012, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department collected a total of 1,553 pounds of unused or expired prescription drugs. Why is proper disposal of these substances so important? There are several factors that should be taken into account.

1. Teenagers now abuse prescription drugs more than any other illegal drug except for marijuana. The majority of teens who abuse these drugs get them for free, usually from friends and relatives and often without their knowledge by raiding the medicine cabinet or by attending "pharming parties" where teens barter legal drugs and get high. Storing unused or outdated prescriptions creates an opportunity for illicit use. One in five teens report intentionally misusing someone else's prescription drugs to get high.

2. Studies have shown that pharmaceuticals and over the counter drugs are present in our nation's waterbodies and certain drugs may cause ecological harm. Outdated or unusable drugs that are disposed of by flushing or pouring down a sink enter the environment because wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove them.

On March 2, 2013, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department will host a Dispose-A-Med event.

The collection site will be located at 2940 W. Valencia Road (in front of Safeway) from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Prescription and over-the-counter tablets, capsules, liquids, and creams will be collected. Metal or glass inhalation aerosol bottles, syringes and epi-pens will not be accepted. For safety and confidentiality reasons, any items turned over for collection cannot be returned. We cannot accept drugs from commercial organizations.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The town of Marana is looking at ways to do capital improvements to the oldest neighborhoods in Marana. Over the next few months the town will survey older neighborhoods and see what amenities they need and form a plan to make sure neighborhoods have paved roads, sidewalks, adequate drainage, lighting and even pocket parks. “We want to make sure that every neighborhood has a base standard for infrastructure,” said Marana Town Manager Gilbert Davidson. The improvements are expected to take years to complete as Marana finds the best plan of action to complete the projects and fund the improvements. Do you think this is a good idea?

How do you feel about a potential memorial art project to honor our community’s bravest men and women?

During the Jan. 20 town council meeting, a vote was unanimously passed to look into the feasibility of a “Memorial Public Art Project,” at the request of Oro Valley resident Dick Eggerding to potentially be placed somewhere in the town to honor military veterans and first responders. Though no concrete plans were then ready to act on, there was a show of overwhelming support for such project from residents and staff alike during the council meeting. In an effort to poll to community at-large, The Explorer would like to know how you feel about a potential memorial art project to honor our community’s bravest men and women.
