In the spirit of match play, no one can predict the outcome of the matches each day. Saturday’s matches were no different, including the Cinderella run of Rickie Fowler.
Fowler, who is currently ranked 56 by the PGA and 126 with his FedEx Cup rank, has been the underdog in every round he has faced in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Being a 14 seed, he was matched with former champion and third-seeded Ian Pouler. Finishing 2 and 1, Fowler advanced to face six-seed Jimmy Walker. Fowler walked away 1 up and defeated Sergio Garcia, a two-seed, on Friday.
On Saturday, Fowler faced Jim Furyk, a five-seed. Fowler took an early lead and was 3 up through five. Though Furyk came back to be down by one, Fowler regained his 3 up lead through 12. That is when Furyk began his come back making the score all square on 15 and coming 1 up on 16.
Fowler knew what he had to do and won the next two to finished 1 up in 18 holes.
Also advancing to the semi finals are Jason Day, Ernie Els and Victor Dubuisson.
