Last week, more than 400 people attended Rattlesnake Ridge Elementary School’s Family Literacy Night.

From 6 to 8 p.m., students and their parents made their way from booth to booth learning, creating and participating in activities all related to reading.

“I think everybody had a good time,” said Tricia Johnson, a kindergarten teacher at the school and who organized the event. “There was lots of movement. There were people in the library at the book fair, there was a group of teachers playing bells out on the stage outside, which was nice – it had a nice ring to the evening.”

In addition, there was a puppet show and a book walk. One of the fifth-grade teachers, Kelly McGarity, dressed up as the Cat in the Hat and read to students.

“She read Dr. Seuss books for two hours, bless her heart,” Johnson said. “The kids came over to the rug, and we were all impressed how they sat and listened to her.”

Another station offered to kids was after reading the book, “If you give a dog a donut,” they were given a donut and some milk.

“I think the night was a success,” Johnson said. “I thought it was great that so many parents came out to be part of the school and get their kids inspired to read more in different and fun ways.”
