Dr. Maria Sheehan

The Pima Community College search for a new chancellor has been put on hold after one of the two finalists withdrew her name Friday.

Dr. Maria C. Sheehan, president of Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nev., was a finalist along with Terrence J. Burgess, president of San Diego City College.

“Because of concerns that have arisen regarding one of the finalists, we as co-chairs of the Search Advisory Committee have directed that the forums be postponed,” search advisory co-chairs Brenda B. Even and David Longoria said in a statement.

“Everyone recognizes the need to proceed with this task as quickly as possible, the statement continued. “Nevertheless, choosing the next chancellor is the Board of Governor’s most important responsibility. It is imperative that the best-possible individual be selected.

Sheehan, who was superintendent/president of Desert Community College prior to working at Truckee Meadows, withdrew her name from contention after reports that Desert Community College overestimated enrollment, and overbilled the state between 2001 and 2007.

According to a report published by California Watch the overestimation resulted in the College of the Desert receiving $5.2 million that should have gone to other districts. The state pays districts roughly $5,000 per full-time student, meaning the state could have funded an estimated 1,052 additional students with that money. http://bit.ly/UwIykB

Because of the new development, the Pima Community College Governing Board have called a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. to discuss the search for a new chancellor. The meeting will be held at the Community Campus, Room A109-112, located at 401 N. Bonita Ave.

The new candidate will replace Pima College’s longtime chancellor, Ray Flores.
