Domestic violence strikes more than 145 times each hour in the U.S. On average, three women die every day as a result. Domestic violence also affects one in four women in their lifetime and strikes more women than breast cancer, lung cancer and ovarian cancer combined. But it’s still hard to talk about. Although October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, most Americans say they wouldn’t know how to help a victim of domestic violence.

That’s why The Allstate Foundation selected the Tucson YWCA as one of 30 local YWCAs across the country to be a part of Purple Purse – the Foundation’s national campaign to build awareness about domestic violence. The Tucson chapter received 10 purple purses to pass along to community members, family and friends to spark conversations that can help survivors break free of violence. Each time a purple purse is passed and checked in at PurplePurse.com, YWCA Tucson will earn a $5 donation from The Allstate Foundation. If the Tucson YWCA passes the purses a total of 1,000 times, The Allstate Foundation will double the donation and reward the organization with a $10,000 grant.

Even without receiving a purple purse, everyone in the Tucson community can get involved by entering a local purse ID number on PurplePurse.com, automatically triggering the $5 donation to the Tucson YWCA. In total, The Allstate Foundation will donate up to $350,000 to YWCA nationally.

WHEN: Now through Oct. 31, 2013, The Allstate Foundation will raise money through thousands of purple purses that get passed and checked in throughout the country, both on www.PurplePurse.com and on www.facebook.com/PurplePurse.
