Former State Sen. Jonathan Paton has announced his candidacy for the state's First Congressional District.

Under the new congressional lines designated by the Arizona Redistricting Commission, Paton, a Republican, will be running in the new area that covers Oro Valley, Marana, SaddleBrooke and extends northward to the state boundary in Flagstaff.

Congressman Paul Gosar currently represents CD1, however, he has announced he will be running in CD4 in the upcoming elections.

The Northwest communities in Pima County and the edge of Pinal County had been under the direction of Congressional District 8. CD8 will soon become District 2 under the new boundaries.

Paton ran in the 2010 District 8 election, losing in the primary to Republican opponent Jesse Kelly. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords went on to be re-elected.

Paton, who served in the State Legislature and is an Iraqi War Veteran, said the 2012 elections are going to be "a defining turning point for our country."

"With unemployment still above eight percent, many of our fellow Arizonans struggling in this economy, a Congress and President that continues to rack up spending, and a government healthcare takeover still looming, who we elect this year to represent us will chart the course for a generation," he said.

Paton will likely face Democratic opponent Ann Kirkpatrick, who was defeated by Gosar in 2010.
