To help those less fortunate before Thanksgiving, Peter and Carollinn Wright, of Oro Valley, collected 1,000 pounds of food to donate.

Inspired by general shortages at food banks this season, the couple decided they would take matters into their own hands.

The couple called all 263 homes in Vistoso Village, off North Rancho Vistoso Blvd. to announce they would be hosting a food drive.

The turnout was a success, as almost everyone from the neighborhood was able to drop off food at the Wright’s home the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Besides neighbors coming to them, Peter and Carollinn also drove to pick up donations from some of the community’s elderly resident who were unable to drive, but wanted to help.

In addition to the 1,000 pounds of non-perishable food, the Wrights also collected $180 and three turkeys.

After the drive was complete, the Wrights boxed up the food and took half of it, along with two turkeys, to Interfaith Community Services.

The remaining turkey and other half of the food was taken to the Catalina Food Bank.

With the help of two other couples, Maryann and Tom Hackett, and Ellen and Bernie Yost, the Wrights were pleased with the outcome, and they hope this will stimulate people in other communities to do the same thing.

“Peter and I were playing Mr. and Mrs. Clause, and the community were our elves,” said Carollinn. “We plan to make this an annual tradition, one that we can continue to build on.”
