Two MVHS students arrested for conspiracy to commit murder

Mountain View High School students Wyatt Bowman, left, and Kevin Pettitt, right, were arrested by Pima County Sheriff deputies for one felony count each of conspiracy to commit murder. The two had planned to kill Pettitt’s 18-year-old ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his child, over custody and money issues.

Two Mountain View High School teenagers have been arrested for conspiring to murder an 18-year-old woman.

Detectives with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department initiated an investigation on Feb. 5, which led to the arrests of 17-year-old Kevin Pettitt and Wyatt Bowman two days later.

According to authorities, the two juveniles were conspiring to kill Pettitt’s 18-year-old ex-girlfriend by luring her into the desert, shooting her, removing her teeth, and burning her body so she could not be identified.

Pettitt, who has a one-year-old child with the ex-girlfriend, was said to have been recently arguing with her over custody and money issues.

Sheriff’s detectives were notified of the conspiracy after an unidentified third party learned of it and called authorities.

The sheriff’s department said the plan, in which Pettitt was to pay Bowman an undisclosed amount of money for his assistance, began around Christmas time. Whether or not a weapon had been obtained has not been released at this point.

The two were arrested on Friday. Pettitt was arrested while at home, and Bowman was taken from Mountain View High School for questioning and later arrested.

The Marana Unified School District subsequently sent out a newsletter to parents of Mountain View High School on Saturday.

“This is very unsettling information and I recognize that you may have questions and may also feel a range of emotions surrounding these arrests,” reads the newsletter, signed by school principal Patricia Cadigan. “Please know that the school district is not aware of any information other than what has been publicly disclosed by law enforcement; however, I can assure you that there is no indication that the circumstance leading to these arrests involve Mountain View High School.”

Bowman and Pettitt have each been charged with one felony count of conspiracy to commit murder and booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center.

It’s important to me that people know that this case was dismissed on Feb. 28th, and all charges dropped. It’s important, because I am Wyatt’s Mom. It’s interesting that all news outlets were very eager to jump all over this story in the beginning, but were not so keen on reporting the fact that the case was dismissed, and all charges dropped. I know of only one news source who reported the case dismissal. I can't begin to explain how awful this entire thing was. To have my son's photo plastered across the news and all over the Internet is beyond painful. My son is a minor, so I don't know how/why all of the press was allowed, but it's too late now. My hope is that Wyatt's life is restored, and his future intact. His life-long goal has been, and still is, to become a Marine. We are hopeful he can still achieve his dream. For all of our supporters (we are blessed with many), thank you.
