In effort to build a strong sense of community, Ironwood Ridge High School will be hosting its third summer basketball camp for boys and girls.

The camp will run for two weeks and in two different sessions. Third through fifth grade boys and girls can attend the first week, which will run June 2-5. From 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., campers will participate in basketball dribbling and shooting drills as well as competitive games. The camp cost $75, which includes a t-shirt, the basketball camp itself, and Camper of the Day awards.

Each day campers will be taught one of the four values: encouragement, resilience, teamwork or improvement. The athlete that best exemplifies the value, for the given day, will be awarded the Camper of the Day, which includes a basketball with the value and date written on it.

“For the young campers, they love the opportunity and experience of being in a high school gym,” said Nikki Simpson, head coach of the girl’s varsity team at Ironwood Ridge. “We want them to learn skills that they can duplicate and give techniques and drills that will improve their game.”

The following week, June 9-12, girls going into grades sixth through ninth can attend the camp. Each day will be run similar to the week prior, with the exception of more competitive games. Helping out at the camps will be some of the high school girl’s basketball players – some of which have helped the past two years.

“For our girls it’s an opportunity for them to give back to the community and build our program up,” said Simpson. “Those who have attended the summer camps are now coming into the high school program here. We’re beginning to see that come full circle.”

Simpson has run the camp the past two years and is looking forward to seeing more campers this year. Each year the number of campers has increased, according to Simpson. Each day of camp is planned out and purposefully designed to improve each camper’s skills.
