In anticipation of Meggitt PLC’s Securaplane office’s grand opening in Oro Valley, U.S. Rep Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz. toured the facility and spoke with its employees on March 20.

Securaplane is currently developing technology for lithium batteries, cameras, security systems and power conversions for private, business and military jets and helicopters. It currently has 182 employees with a facility designed to employ 260.

“My work in congress is really centered around jobs and building a desirable, stable economy, not only in our congressional districts, but throughout Arizona,” Kirkpatrick said to the employees after she toured the facility with the company’s president, Shubhayu Chakraborty. “So what you are doing here is very much a part of that.”

In the last five years, Chakraborty said Securaplane has had a 50-percent growth in employment, as well as an increase in productivity of 25 percent as it creates new products for companies like Gulfstream, Airbus, Boeing, Cessna and Beechcraft, as well as others.

“I admire your commitment to your people, to innovation, which will extend to our schools through STEM programs in Oro Valley,” Kirkpatrick said. “We need that kind of skillset to do this kind of engineering and this kind of manufacturing.”

Securaplane was founded in 1986. Danaher acquired it in 2000. Then, in 2011, Meggitt PLC acquired it. This year, its next advancement was expanding and moving to Oro Valley.

Kirkpatrick is up for reelection in 2014 for Arizona’s District 1.
