Tortoise on a mission

Regarding the Aug. 2 story “Pet tortoise returned to family after months on the lam:” I want to thank The Explorer for publishing the recent article about an Oro Valley family’s pet tortoise who was “on the lam” for two months before being found and returned to his owners.

Not only was it a sweet story that restored my faith in mankind due to all of the people who pitched in to protect him along the way and eventually helped him to make his way back home, but it was also an amusing story with one sentence in particular that made me laugh out loud.

“…[the tortoise] made it to the Oro Valley Town Hall site, where he was observed trying to enter the Community Development and Public Works facilities.”

Isn’t it obvious what he was trying to do?  He was on a mission to file a complaint with them about the rampant development that is destroying his once beautiful desert surroundings.  Considering that he was so passionate about this issue that he risked life and limb in order to have his voice heard, I would hope that the Town Council will listen to him since Lord knows they don’t listen to anyone else.
