Longtime local journalist Jim Nintzel has been named executive editor of Explorer and Marana News.
Nintzel, who has covered politics, science and culture for Tucson Weekly for more than two decades, will oversee both papers as well as Tucson Local Media’s other publications, including Tucson Weekly, Inside Tucson Business, Foothills News and Desert Times.
Logan Burtch-Buus, who has been staff writer at Tucson Local Media since July 2015, will become managing editor of Explorer and Marana News as well as Inside Tucson Business, Foothills News and Desert Times.
“Jim has the right experience for someone to oversee our publications, and I’ve been quite impressed by the outstanding work Logan has been doing at the Explorer,” Tucson Local Media Publisher Jason Joseph said. “I’m confident the two of them are going to bring fresh new energy to the Tucson Local Media family.”
Nintzel has earned more than 50 statewide and national awards for his political reporting, commentary and feature writing, including being named a journalist of year by the Arizona Press Club and the Arizona Newspaper Association on multiple occasions.
He is also the host of the radio and TV programs “Zona Politics with Jim Nintzel” and has taught government reporting at the UA School of Journalism. He was a regular contributor to Arizona Public Media for two decades.
“I’m always up for a fresh challenge,” Nintzel said.
Burtch-Buus, a UA grad, said he was excited about the opportunities ahead.
“I’m hoping to build on what previous editors have done and take the publications to new heights,” Burtch-Buus said. “The goal is to bring readers the news they need across all our publications.”
