Kartchner Caverns State Park

Kartchner Caverns State Park is worth the drive near Benson. Nestled in the Whetstone Mountains, park officials work year-round to assure that the cave stays healthy, vibrant and alive. The formations in both caves are continuously growing.

Thelma Grimes, The Explorer

There’s an underground treasure in Cochise County known as Kartchner Caverns State Park, east of Tucson near Benson.

The Big Room and Rotunda rooms are available for tours through the summer.

All tours are led by a trained guide, no self-guided tours are available. Various tours are scheduled daily.

The cave has an average temperature of 72 degrees, and 99 percent humidity year-round, so it will feel very warm and steamy. Most areas are dimly lit and some passages may pass through narrow or enclosed areas. This may be difficult for persons with mobility, respiratory or claustrophobia issues.

Reservations can be made seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For those looking to spend longer than one day, there is currently free camping available with the purchase of two adult tour tickets. Call 520-586-2283 to redeem this promotion. Free campsite must be used on same visit.

Cost of admission for the Rotunda Room and Big Room is $22.95 for adults, $12.95 for children seven though 13, and children under seven are free.
