In the midst of another outbreak of war, it becomes increasingly difficult to find events with no political affiliation or tie-in. While I am in no way saying that news of the ongoing developments with Syria is unimportant, sometimes you need to get your mind off of things.
Luckily, the cinema community afforded some interesting news last Wednesday morning when the internet grew quite tumultuous based on rumors that prolific actor Jack Nicholson would be retiring from acting all together.
The accomplished actor, producer, screenwriter, and director was apparently making the quiet decision to end his career after more than five decades in the business. Initially, these reports claimed that the 76 year-old actor was suffering from issues with his memory that inhibited his ability to remember his scripts and recite lines for movies.
This announcement was first leaked to gossip site Radar by an “unnamed insider”.
“There is a simple reason behind his decision — it’s memory loss. Quite frankly, at 76, Jack has memory issues and can no longer remember the lines being asked of him. His memory isn’t what it used to be.”
This rumor would seem to hold some water. The aging actor has only done two movies within the past few years and news of new projects have not reached anyone’s ears in quite some time. Nicholson’s last two films were “The Bucket List” in 2007 and “How Do You Know” in 2010. Out of the limelight for the past few years, many fans are concerned that they will never get to see Nicholson back on the big screen.
Nicholson has performed in almost 70 movies since the 1960’s when he landed his breakthrough role in “The Little Shop of Horrors”. Since then, Nicholson has been nominated 12 times for an Oscar for Best Actor and has won the award on two separate occasions for “As Good As It Gets” in 1998 and “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” in 1976. He also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1984 for “Terms of Endearment”. Nicholson is also notable for being one of two actors to have received an Oscar nomination in every decade since the 1960’s, the only other being the great Michael Caine. Truly, Nicholson sits in the company of the greatest actors of all time.
This surprising announcement caused quite the uproar across many different media outlets. Fans of the actor panicked and looked to Twitter to share their shock. The social media site was a hotbed of concern about the actor as many were sad to see one of the greatest American thespians of all time end his phenomenal career. Multiple websites immediately began compiling top 10 lists of the actor’s best performances, paying their respect to the man.
News sites across the internet began relaying the news to their readers. Within hours “Jack Nicholson Retiring” became one of the most searched phrases on the internet.
There is good reason to keep your worrying at bay, however. A representative of Nicholson’s responded to the rumors in a short statement to NBC News later that day denying all of the rumors. The news network did not post anything definitive other than a short video to address the issue. The rep told NBC that the actor has in no way stepped down from acting and is suffering from no memory issues whatsoever. Better yet, the actor is apparently working on scripts for his next project. Not only is Jack Nicholson still on the horse, so to speak, he is even working on a new project.
For one short day it seemed that the limelight had faded out on one of the greatest American actors of all time, if not one of the best in the history of cinema. Jack Nicholson has been entertaining generations of people for fifty years now, and the end does not seem to be in sight. The gossipers may continue to say what they will, but until there is an official release from Nicholson himself, the safe bet is that the actor will return to movies soon.
