PCC Faculty Speakers’ Series begins Feb. 4

Pima Community College will kick-off the first lecture of the spring Speakers’ Series, Tuesday, Feb. 4, with Gene Trester and Lee Lambert’s presentation, “Creating Climates for Learning in 21st Century College Classrooms.”

During this presentation, Mr. Trester and Chancellor Lambert will discuss teaching and learning in a college atmosphere.

Mr. Trester will discuss the Transmission Model and Enculturation Model of teaching and learning; and Chancellor Lambert will talk about his learning experiences at The Evergreen State College, Wash., a college with a national reputation for educational excellence. PCC students who’ve experienced the Enculturation Method also will provide commentary on their learning experiences.

Lectures are held at 6 p.m., in the Community Board Room (Building C) of the PCC District Office, 4905 E. Broadway Blvd.  Light refreshments will be available. All lectures are free and open to the public. 

The Faculty Speakers’ Series, in its fourth year, showcases the expertise and accomplishments of College faculty. 

Throughout the series, faculty members share their experiences with the college community, while addressing some of today’s most intriguing topics.

The 2014 Speakers’ Series schedule and topics are:

  • February 4:  “Creating Climates for Learning in 21st Century College Classrooms,” by Eugene “Gene” Trester, Ph.D., Anthropology Faculty, and Lee D. Lambert, J.D., Chancellor.  Mr. Trester has been devoted to implementing the Enculturation Model of teaching/learning at Pima for more than 10 years.  He holds a Ph.D., in Adult Learning Theory and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Toronto, Canada. Chancellor Lambert has been with Pima since July 2013.  He is the former president of Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Wash.  He received his Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law.  
  • March 4:  “How to Get Published,” by Carin Rubenstein, Ph.D., Psychology Faculty.  Rubenstein has more than two decades of experience in journalism and publishing.  She is the author of four books and has written more than 100 articles for The New York Times and has contributed to many national publications. 
  • April 1:  “Earthquakes in the Western U.S.:  Is Arizona at Risk?,” by Noah Fay, Ph.D., Geology Faculty.  Fay has been a faculty member in Pima’s Geology Department since 2009.  He also teaches geology at The University of Arizona.  Fay has a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Oregon. 
  • October 7:  “Life, Death and Redemption at the Grand Canyon,” by Tom McDonald, Physiology Faculty.  McDonald is an adjunct faculty member at Central Arizona College and Pima.  He also is a docent instructor and co-presenter of Sonoran Desert reptiles at Tohono Chul Park.  Each summer, McDonald spends a month hiking and camping in remote parts of the Grand Canyon and southern Utah.
  • November 4:  “The Aging Brain,” by Sarah B. Burger, Ph.D., Psychology Faculty.  Burger has been an adjunct faculty member in Pima’s Psychology Department since 2012.  She also teaches undergraduate courses at The University of Arizona, supervises doctoral students through UA’s departmental clinic and works full time in private practice as a clinical neuropsychologist.  She earned her Ph.D., in Clinical Psychology from UA. 
  • December 2:  “The U.S. Poetry Academy,” by Kristen Hoggatt, Writing Faculty.  Hoggatt has been an adjunct faculty member in Pima’s Writing Department since 2012.  She received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Emerson College, Boston.
