Pima Community College will kick-off the first lecture of the fall Speakers’ Series, Tuesday, Oct. 1, with Barry Infuso’s presentation, “Chinese Grocery Store:  From Chorizo to Saladito.”

During the free presentation, Infuso will discuss the culinary and cultural history of the early Chinese grocers in the Old Pueblo.  Three short films, “Chinese Chorizo,” Chinese Tamales” and “Saladito” also will be shown. 

The Speakers’ Series, now in its third year, is designed to “showcase the expertise and accomplishments of College faculty with the College community and members of the community at large,” said Dr. Jerry Migler, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, who is sponsoring the series along with PCC’s Faculty Senate. 

Infuso, Culinary Arts faculty, has a passion for food and culture.  He learned about the food traditions and cultural legacy of Tucson’s Chinese community through the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center. 

Infuso helped develop the Culinary Arts program at Pima’s Desert Vista Campus 12 years ago.  He has an M.A. in Nutrition and Anthropology from Prescott College, Ariz., and a B.A. in Business and Psychology from University of California, Berkeley. He also is a Certified Executive Chef and Certified Culinary Educator by the American Culinary Federation.

The 2013 Speakers’ Series schedule and topics are:

  • October 1:  “Chinese Grocery Store:  From Chorizo to Saladito,” by Barry Infuso, Culinary Arts faculty
  • November 5:  “Whales of Baja,” by Kathryn “Katie” Iverson, Biology faculty
  • December 3:  “Climate Change at Arctic’s Edge,” by Dr. Silvia Kolchens, Chemistry faculty

All lectures are free and will be held at 6 p.m., in the Community Board Room (Building C) of the PCC District Office, 4905 E. Broadway Blvd.  Light refreshments will be available.
