Christopher Wuensch,

Nov. 9, 2005 - Current and future professional tennis players will be on display in the Northwest as Oro Valley hosts a week's worth of world-class competition

The Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, 10000 N. Oracle Road, will host four events including the 27th Annual USTA Southwest Senior Closed Championships, 2005 Southwest National Tennis Rating Program Championships, El Conquistador Junior Satellite Tournament and the United States Tennis Association/Southern Arizona $75,000 Women's Professional Tennis Tournament.

Tournaments will begin Nov. 13 and continue through Nov. 20 and will be played at both the resort and the Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Country Club, 10555 N. La CaƱada Drive.

More than 300 players, both professional and amateur, will highlight the four events.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 20, ranked No. 22 in the world, will be among the professionally ranked players competing in the women's pro tourney. Groenefeld may be best known for pairing up with Martina Navratilova to reach the doubles semifinals of the US Open.

Joining the German native will be competitors with experience playing on the international level, many of whom have appeared in all four Grand Slams - the U.S. Open, the French Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The tournament will feature 32 singles draws and 16 doubles. This is the first year it is being played as a $75,000 event and is the last of six of its kind played throughout the United State this year.

Earning a qualifying wildcard into the NTRP event will be Allison Jech, a junior from Ironwood Ridge High School. Jech is among the top junior tennis players in Southern Arizona.

Qualifying rounds will take place Nov. 13 and 14 with the main draw kicking off on Nov. 15.

Kids under the age of 18 will get in free on Nov. 19 for the semifinals. Otherwise, tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or through will call.

Events open for public participation include a community league night on Nov. 18 where tourney participants and outsiders can compete against one another.

The tournament will benefit the Arizona Cancer Center, the Lupus Foundation and the not-for-profit SAZ Tennis.
