On a recent hike up Sombrero Peak in Marana, Laura Hoffman came across this desert tortoise. The reptiles have become increasingly rare in the area, due in large part to effects of a prolonged drought and habitat loss from development. The Explorer welcomes reader-submitted photographs, which will run in this space most weeks. Make sure your camera is set to shoot high-quality pictures — a minimum image size of 1600 X 1200 pixels. We will not accept images of lower quality, especially those taken with a cell phone camera.
