Ironwood Ridge used timely hitting and an early lead to beat Maricopa 10-3 on Thursday afternoon, concluding their season with a win.
The Nighthawks scored four runs in the second inning and led 6-0 before Maricopa ‘s bats briefly came alive to plate three, and trim the Ironwood Ridge lead in half.
Ironwood Ridge came right back and broke things open with four more in the top of the seventh.
Although they only had eight hits on the day, six went for extra base hits. Derek Daly and Jeremy Knipe each belted home runs, Daly a solo shot and Knape a grand slam, while Brandon Martinez, Nick Estrella, Jesus Ramirez and Jake Engel each laced doubles. Engle was 3-3 on the day, while Daly and Spencer Wilson each scored twice.
Kenyon Kautz went 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Evan Molnar closed out the sixth and pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.
Although most teams will play into next week, the Nighthawks conclude their season going 15-12 overall and 7-10 in regular season games. They will not qualify for the playoffs.
