The Marana boys volleyball team righted the ship just a bit and earned and important 3-2 win over Tucson High on Tuesday night. The Tigers snapped a two-game skid and attempt to remain a part of the 24-team state playoffs.
The Tigers fell behind the Badgers early, dropping the first set 25-18, then needing some key points down the stretch to tie the match with a 25-23 second set win.
The Badgers answered by beating the Tigers 25-19 in the third set. Down 2-1, the Tigers had no margin for error and played very good volleyball. They evened the match by winning the fourth set 25-17, then made the key plays late and took the fifth, and deciding, set 15-12.
The win was key for the Tigers as they entered the night ranked 24th and, more importantly, holding onto third place in Section III. The top three teams in each section get automatic bids to the tournament, regardless of where they are ranked in the state. Even if Marana is ranked in the top-24, they could get bounced by a lower ranked team if they finish in the top-three. As of now only a few teams outside the top-24 are flirting with top-three sectional finishes.
The Tigers improved to 9-5 in regular season games and 18-12 overall and remain ranked 24th in Wednesday’s poll. They are tied with Salpointe for third place in Section III.
They close out the regular season at home against Flowing Wells on Thursday night.
