Despite falling way behind early, The Catalina Foothills baseball team rallied and beat Cienga 7-5 in the first round of the Division II State Baseball Tournament on Saturday.
The visiting Bobcats struck first, scoring all five of their runs in the second inning, taking advantage of a key Falcon error and getting timely base hits from Andre Jackson, Omar Rodriguez and Jake Repavich. Each drove in a run, while Jackson and Rodriguez also scored.
In the end it would be the Cienega gloves that would fail them. The Bobcats committed five errors and the Falcons took advantage with three runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth to tie things up, then took the lead in the sixth with two more runs.
Just two of the seven runs were earned. While errors proved costly, Foothills’ Austin Baldwin also blasted a home run.
Luis Gonzalez got the win for the Falcons, his fifth on the season.
The Falcons will next play at No. 3 Bradshaw Mountain on Tuesday.
