Three area players are still alive in the Division II Girls Tennis Tournament. All three won their first two matches and are among the final 16 players in the event.
Two will meet in the third round on May 2 . Both Catalina Foothills’ Kirtana Bhat and CDO’s Carolina Pensky cruised to the third round and will meet on for a shot at the quarterfinals.
Bhat emerged unscathed from the first two rounds, failing to drop a single game. First she shut out Stacy Heyer of Flowing Wells , the cruised past Melissa Mata of San Luis.
Penksy was not quite as dominant, but looked solid. She beat Payton Romero 6-3, 6-1 in her opening match, then settled down and cruised 6-0, 6-1 past Prescott’s Elizabeth Foreste
Ironwood Ridge’s Stephanie Nickles had to battle to win her second round match, after cruising 6-1, 6-0 in the first round she lost her first set of the second round 6-4 to Alysa Scharbrough of Lake Havasu. The next two sets were all Nickles’ as she took each of them 6-1, 6-1.
Two other local players were eliminated over the weekend.
Marana’s Amanda Henke fell in the second round. She won her first match 6-2, 6-2 but fell to Douglas’ Kaycie Cormier 6-2, 6-4.
Mountain View’s Savannah Kelly fell in the first round to Scharbrough. She hung around early in each set but eventually fell 6-2, 6-3.
