The Catalina Foothills baseball team fended off a late rally and downed visiting Vista Grande 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Falcons came out of the gates strong scoring two in the first and five in the second to go up 5-1. Their bats quieted down from there but they still led 5-1 heading into the seventh inning.

The Spartans made one final push, scoring three runs in the final inning, but could not come all the way back.

Anthony DeNiro got the win for the Falcons.

They are now 11-4 in regular season games and a firmly in the playoff mix with their No. 16 ranking. 24 teams make the postseason.

The Falcons return to action on Friday with a road game against Mountain View.

Things did not go as well for the Falcon softball team. They lost 6-1 to Vista Grande, falling to 5-19 overall on the season.

The Spartans struck first in the second, getting a single run, then added two more in the third and fourth. The Falcons finally got on the scoreboard with a lone run in the seventh.

The Falcons were out-hit 15-6 and committed four errors on the day.
