A late rally propelled the Salpointe baseball team to a 4-1 win over Marana on Tuesday afternoon. The Lancers broke open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth inning.
The Tigers had one last chance in the top of the seventh, but Salpointe starter Jio Orozco closed the door on them to earn the win and improve to 7-1 on the season.
The game was a real pitcher’s duel for the first five innings. Both Orozco and Marana’s Jake Thompson were in control, keeping hitters guess for the first three innings.
The Lancers finally scratched out a run in the fourth and led 1-0 until the top of the sixth when Marana answered with their lone run of the game.
Salpointe was held to just six hits, but four of them went for doubles.
Marana had just five hits on the afternoon. Joseph Valdez doubled, while Diego Urias hit the lone triple of the contest.
The loss is a tough one for the Tigers who are still chasing a playoff berth and despite identical records entering the game, trailed the Lancers in the state seedings. The loss drops them to 8-4 in regulars season games that count towards the post season, but after starting off the season 5-0, they have dropped four of their last seven. They are 14-6 overall.
Salpointe improved to 9-3 in regular season games.
