Free lipid profile screenings are being provided for students and staff on Friday, April 3, at Mountain View High School.

Students in a career and technical education class, Advanced Medical Laboratory Assisting, are doing the screenings.

Cholesterol is “the silent killer in all of us,” a Marana Unified School District release said. Lipid profile screenings provide the opportunity “to learn about the good HDL, the bad LDL, and the ugly cholesterol and triglycerides.”

“Providing this type of service allows students to obtain valuable work based learning experience at school while also fighting the ‘silent killer’ known as cholesterol,” said Rose Prater, a medical laboratory assisting instructor at the school.

Lee Hilborne, president of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, said a shortage in laboratory workers is a further challenge. “Most people are unaware that medical laboratory personnel are trained to perform tests that help with the detection and treatment of disease,” Hilborne said. “Ms. Prater is attempting to tackle both problems with this screening.”
