Fraudulent checks in the mail in Oro Valley

The Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD) has become aware of several residents who have received letters containing fraudulent checks.

The letters state the recipient has won a prize and if they make contact with an “agent” they would receive the amount of the check. Other letters ask the resident to pay the taxes upfront to a Western Union account and in return they will receive a larger amount in the mail within 24-48 hours.

These are not real checks or winnings and residents should discard them immediately. The OVPD reminds residents to keep track of all bank accounts by checking them often and to periodically check their credit reports to ensure that no unauthorized accounts have been opened.
