Homicide suspect arrested

After months of following up on leads and locating additional witnesses, detectives were able to identify the suspect in this investigation. On August 15, detectives located and arrested 21-year old Zechary Mazitis in the downtown area without incident. He was booked into the Pima County Jail for 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder and 2 counts of Aggravated Assault. The arrest was made by officers in a Specialized Unit within Operations Division West.

On November 16, 2012, at 10:56 p.m., officers from Operations Division East responded to the 3300 block of South Grady Avenue in reference to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located two adult males in the middle of the street suffering from gunshot trauma. Both were transported to a local area hospital with critical injuries.

Night Detectives and Aggravated Assault Detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They learned that the two victims were in the backseat of a vehicle that was in motion when the driver shot both of them. The vehicle stopped in the 3300 block of South Grady Avenue at which time the driver pulled both victims out of the vehicle and onto the street. The vehicle then left in an unknown direction. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male with short, spiky hair. There was a female in the front passenger seat of the vehicle described as Hispanic, heavy set, with dark hair.

The vehicle was described as a silver passenger car. On November 19, 2012, one of the shooting victims succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as 18-year old Andrew Liska. Next of kin has been notified.

The investigation is ongoing at this time. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
