Pima County is conducting two pilot projects at 25 polling places on Primary Election Day, Aug. 26, 2014, aimed at improving the voting process and controlling costs.
In the first pilot project, the 25 polling places will use iPads instead of signature roster books to process voters on Primary Election Day.
Poll workers will use the iPads to scan voters’ driver’s licenses and verify their identification. Voters will sign their names on the iPad screens.
In the second pilot project, voters will put their finished ballots into a secure ballot box instead of an electronic scanner. The ballots will all be counted at the end of the evening in the Elections Department.
Please rest assured there will be no skimping on security of your ballot and the electoral process. Protecting your right to vote is the number one priority.
Pima County is in the early stages of planning and procuring new election equipment, as the current equipment used in polling places on Election Day is old, outdated and breaking down at a high rate.
Secure ballot boxes may again replace scanners on General Election Day, Nov. 4, 2014. If this pilot program is successful, the estimated $1.8 million that would have been needed to replace the aging scanners will be saved.
