O'odham's large pow wow set for March 14-15

For the 27th year, the Tohono O’odham Nation puts on its Wa:K pow wow on Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15, in the San Xavier District south of Tucson of I-19.

Wa:K is the area’s largest gathering of American Indian food, crafts and dancing. Dancers, drums, native royalty, native vendors and the public are welcome.Gates open Saturday at 10:30 a.m., Sunday at 10 a.m.

Grand entries for dancers are set for 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, and noon Sunday.

Gourd dancing goes on Saturday at 1 and 6 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m.

Contests for team dancing, drum, hoop dance and two-step are planned.

Ryan Rumley of Phoenix is the master of ceremonies. Yolanda Frenchman is the head judge. The host Northern Drum is the New Circle Singers of Phoenix.

Entrance is $3 to park, $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 7-12, and free to children under 7.

Powwow is a drug- and alcohol-free event.
