Explorer staff report

"Carmen," the passionate opera by Georges Bizet, is being staged by the Arizona Opera Nov. 13 and 14 in Tucson.

Beforehand, the Opera Guild of Southern Arizona presents two previews – one in Oro Valley Nov. 3, a second in Tucson Nov. 5 – to tell the story and share some of the music from one of opera's great standards.

"Say Hello to Opera" is narrated by Vivian Weede at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Oro Valley Public Library. Weede also narrates "Brown Bag Opera" Friday, Nov. 5, at noon at Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Tucson.

Previews, typically done a week or two ahead of the performances, are billed as an "informative, entertaining event featuring talented local singers," a release said.

The narrator "… goes through the background of the opera and explains the story of the opera," said Bob Weede, who volunteers with the Opera Guild of Southern Arizona. "The people get the story behind the opera, some information about the composer, and the story of the opera itself."

In addition, several members from the opera company sing the major arias and duets from the work.

Preview participants go to the opera with "a better understanding of what it is they're listening to and what they're watching," Bob Weede said.

The opera guild presents a number of scholarships to music students at the University of Arizona. "That's the main thrust of the opera guild," Bob Weede said. "It supports the young singers, and also provides education for all ages."

This is Arizona Opera's 40th anniversary season.
