It’s not too late to “Stuff the Bus” at Ina and Oracle for “Miracle on 31st Street.”

For the past 40 years, “Miracle on 31st Street” has held a Christmas Eve celebration for children living in some of Tucson’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. It is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff.

“Tucson has been so very generous so far,” said Bob Blizzard, one of the organization’s board members, “but there are miles to go before we sleep if we are going to gather the 15,000 toys we need for the more than 8,000 children we are expecting to show up this year.”

Through last week, volunteers were one-third of the way toward meeting their 15,000-toy goal.

“I know this community will not let the children down,” said board member Cindy Ramirez. “Tucson is known as a place where we take care of our own, and these children belong to our community. We want them to know that we value them.”

Volunteer board members “knew this would be a tough year,” said Armando Duarte, “so we got together in June and purchased an old SunTran bus at auction. The bus is brightly decorated and will be on the corner of Ina and Oracle at the old Shell gas station — ready for community members to drop off toys.”

Volunteers are taking toys and cash donations at Ina and Oracle from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through this Wednesday, Dec. 22. Toys and donations can be dropped off at any Tucson Federal Credit Union location. Donations are being accepted at all Bank of America branches. “Just mention ‘Miracle on 31st Street,’” the release said.

This year’s “Miracle on 31st Street” is being held at Tucson Electric Park on Christmas Eve, this Friday, Dec. 24, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Santa arrives via helicopter at 10 a.m. There will be music, food and entertainment.
