This Saturday, July 11, marks the 65th anniversary of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, an organization dedicated to rescuing, protecting and saving animals.

To celebrate its birthday, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is offering adoption specials, to include:

• $65 adoption for mixed breed dogs and cats;

• $30 for pets it has had for 30 days or longer;

• $25 for pets that are 5 years or over;

• Two for one cats, or one cat for $55.

Adoption specials exclude puppies and kittens under four months of age, purebreds, and dogs weighing less than 25 pounds. All adoption fees include a micro-chip, up-to-date vaccinations, sterilization surgery, a bag of food, and a free vet visit. The society is located at 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd., north of Fort Lowell between Country Club and Dodge in Tucson.

Birthday presents are welcome, too. The Humane Society needs canned dog and cat food, large "kong-like" toys, dog kennels and crates, quality dog biscuits and treats, blankets, towels and rugs, and monetary donations for sick or injured animals.

People may call 321-3704, extension 174, or go to www.hssaz.org.

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona was formed July 11, 1944. Initially, it had a small house with adjacent dog runs. In 1974, the society opened its first spay and neuter clinic, and has since sterilized more than 286,000 animals. That work makes "only a bare dent in our community's pet overpopulation problem," a release said.

While space is limited, the HSSA has accepted more than 20,000 abandoned animals in its highest year, and it has paid attention to more than 175,000 animals in the last 10 years.

"Cared for by compassionate staff, these animals have had their best opportunity to find a safe, loving new home," the society continued.
