Without peeking, do you know how much the word C-R-O-W-N scores in a game of Scrabble™?

If you said 11 points* (and even if you didn’t), you’re still a candidate to have fun this Thursday when the Wheeler Taft Abbett, Sr. Library hosts Smorgasboard, a family-friendly night of board games for ages 12 and up.

Hang out and play Uno®, Taboo®, Apples to Apples®, Scrabble™,

Bananagrams®, Set, and more. Players are welcome to bring any board game they enjoy.

Smorgasboard has been taking place at the library for about a year and is growing in popularity, says librarian Jennifer Caldwell. The interactive event started as a teen program but quickly expanded to entire families because the families were coming by to drop off the teens.

“People are getting interested in board games again. With the economy, more people are staying home and rediscovering the good times they can have playing the non-electronic games,” Caldwell explained. “They’re a great way for families to interact.”

The game night is open to players of all skill levels.

“We have a little of bit of everything, including Chutes and Ladders for the little ones,” says Caldwell. “We even had a toddler play a game of 52 Pickup once,” she joked.

Players also are welcome to bring in their own games for the night of non-competitive fun.

The library listens to game suggestions from the public. It hopes to expand its collection of games in the future.

* The word totals 11 points when played on non-bonus squares: C-3, R-1, O-1, W-4, D-2.
