Special to The Explorer

A special TSO Pops! Holiday Spectacular on Saturday, Dec. 19 celebrates Tucson's vibrant Latino music and arts.

A year ago, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Fundación México formed an alliance to increase the Hispanic community's cultural scene. This year, Fundación Mexico has purchased tickets from the TSO to sell, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Fundacion's Scholarship Fund.

The program is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Tucson Music Hall, 260 S. Church Ave.

The TSO Pops! Holiday Spectacular has become a family tradition in Tucson, with selections from "A Southwest Nutcracker" performed by the Tucson Regional Ballet, favorite holiday carols by the TSO Chorus and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

This year, the Mariachi Aztlan de Pueblo High School, John Contreras director, will perform "Feliz Navidad," "Fum Fum Fum" and "El Niño Perdido." Additional music to be performed on the program includes carols such as "Joy to the World," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and "The First Noel," plus "A Musicological Journey Through the 12 Days of Christmas" and a holiday sing-along.

The TSO's partnership with Fundación México on the Holiday Spectacular follows a successful alliance last season for the TSO's ¡Fiesta! The TSO partnered with the MTCVB Vamos a Tucson program, the Mexican Consulate and many of Tucson's valuable Hispanic organizations including the Fundación with a ticket offer for a program, Latin Flavor with The Romeros, featuring the world famous Romero Guitar Quartet.

People may purchase TSO Pops! Holiday Spectacular tickets by Dec. 12 through American Family Insurance, 2700 N. Oracle Rd., 520-300-5368; Las Cazuelitas restaurants (234 E. 22nd St., 3535 E. Fort Lowell or 1365 W. Grant Rd.; the Arevalo Law Firm (2802 E 22nd St); and El Guero Canelo restaurants (2480 N. Oracle Rd., 5201 S. 12th Ave).
