Influenced by music from Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Diane Reeves and Gretchen Parlato, New Orleans jazz singer Eleonor Winston will serenade audiences in a historic Tucson setting on Friday, June 3 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Hear a mix of jazz standards and contemporary jazz from Winston at St. Philip’s Plaza, on the southeast corner of River Road and Campbell Avenue, for a night of artistic entertainment and special offers from upscale merchants.
Winston was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden and moved to New Orleans in 1992 to study jazz vocals at the University of New Orleans under the direction of world-renowned pianist Ellis Marsalis.
After finishing her studies, Winston remained in New Orleans performing at weddings and private functions as well as singing in many of the city’s restaurants and jazz clubs. Her musical accomplishments eventually earned her a prime performance spot at the world-famous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Winston and her husband Brice Winston, who is a jazz saxophonist and director of the Tucson Jazz Institute, and their two daughters made their way to Brice’s hometown of Tucson, bringing this world-famous music festival performer to St. Philip’s Plaza.
Designed to add cultural opportunities in the community, Friday Night LIVE takes place once a month on Fridays. It features free children’s art activities, special fashion displays, art exhibits and demonstrations from local artists, strolling performances, live music and more.
For years, St. Philip’s Plaza has hosted events like farmer’s markets, tango nights and jazz concerts. Now, the plaza will present a unique series bringing businesses, community members, artisans and musicians together through the arts.
Strolling performances include vocals and guitar with Diane Davis, while children can enjoy face painting by Maddy’s Face and Body Art and balloon twisting art with Mama Mary Sister Twister as well as a living statue performance by Audra de Bauchera.
The summer line-up includes Dixieland jazz by the River Road Ramblers on July 1, blues from Bryan Dean & Koko on Aug. 5, and rock/blues/country/soul by the Jim Howell Band on Sept. 2.
