Marana celebrates a birthday this Saturday, with a full roster of activities for its 33rd annual Founders' Day celebration centered at Ora Mae Harn Park.

Adelina Martin, special events and volunteer coordinator for the Town of Marana Parks and Recreation Department, rattles off the offerings.

The parade, with grand marshal Georgia Acker, begins at 9 a.m. There are 40 entries, "close to what we had last year," Martin said.

Businesses, political leaders, Scouts, the Marana Health Center, the Pusch Ridge Christian Academy Band and plenty of others are part of the parade.

At 11 a.m., everyone adjourns to the park.

Much of this year's new attention is focused on the town swimming pool, which is being stocked with 500 catfish by the Arizona Game and Fish Department on Wednesday. Come Saturday, volunteers can help kids catch those fish, some of them up to 12 inches long. They'll provide poles and help bait the hooks.

"Our pool is looking pretty pond-like, it's green, it's got some weeds in it, so the fish should be happy," Martin said. The pool has been scheduled for drainage and acid washing. "We were going to have to drain it any ways."

The fishing goes from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., "or all the fish are caught."

The stage shows are "eclectic," to include an Elvis impersonator, an illusionist, bands, belly dancers and an opera singer.

Along the way there is a Little League baseball tournament, the Marana Flag Football Super Bowl, safety information and devices for the kids, a face painter, a petting zoo, skateboard demonstrations, a balloon artist, a car show, food vendors and a cultural heritage display.

People are asked to bring canned food for donation to the Marana Food Bank. For $10, kids get a wrist band that's good for unlimited time on the inflatables, and up to five carnival games, Martin said.
