Two of the blues world’s top female vocalists are slated to perform at Plaza Palomino on consecutive weekends.

Award-winning vocalist Janiva Magness is headlining this Friday starting at 7:30 p.m.

A charismatic performer known for her electrifying live shows, Magness is a gutsy and dynamic musical powerhouse.

She received the coveted 2009 Blues Music Awards for B.B. King Entertainer of the Year.

She is only the second woman ever to win this award; Koko Taylor was the first.

Magness also was twice named Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, an honor she received in 2006 and 2007.

She has received 11 previous Blues Music Award nominations.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $23 at the door.

Maria Muldaur and Her Red Hot Bluesiana Band are next, performing Nov. 5 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Muldaur is probably best known to audiences for her hit “Midnight at the Oasis,” but blues fans are familiar with her funky, blues and gospel tunes, with what Muldaur calls, “really uplifting, positive messages.”

Tickets for her show are $25 in advance, $28 at the door and $15 for students with ID.

Advance tickets for both shows may be purchased at Antigone Books, 411 N. 4th Ave, all Bookmans locations and Dark Star Leather in Plaza Palomino, 2970 N. Swan Road in Tucson.
