A special celebration may occur Saturday, when the fifth annual Oro Valley Holiday Parade moves along Naranja Drive.
Jackie Devery, driving force behind the parade along with Joyce Swiokla and Pat Jimenez, is trying to get the 4A-II state champion Canyon Del Oro football team to be a part of the celebration.
Such an entry would be consistent with Devery's objective.
"It's all about showing the community, letting it shine," Devery said Monday. "I would like to honor them in the parade. The cheerleaders and the band are already in it."
The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, following a route from Ironwood Ridge High School east along Naranja Drive to the Oro Valley Town Hall campus. Santa Claus finishes the event, and he'll be available afterward for time with the children at Oro Valley Town Hall.
The parade had 46 entries as of Monday, down a little from past years. There is much music, from the bands at Ironwood Ridge and Canyon Del Oro high schools, and from Coronado and Cross middle schools. Devery reminded entrants that they've got to be on site at IRHS by 8 a.m. The intersection of La Cholla and Naranja is being closed shortly after 8.
Swiokla, Jimenez and a group of volunteers "work their butts off" to make the parade happen, Devery said. She has had "an anonymous person come forward to tell me there will always be money for the parade, so I don't lose my spunk, or the girls' spunk, to put on this community event."
Devery wants to make sure people stand and recognize the nation's colors as they move past. Golder Ranch Fire District and the Oro Valley Police Department present the colors.
"People along the parade route have not been standing up as the color guard goes by," Devery said. "When the colors pass, you should stand up to recognize them and respect them."
KOLD-TV's Heather Rowe is the parade hostess. "She loves it, she loves to do it," Devery said. The title sponsor is Hiremath Family Dentistry. The Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance provides operational support. Staging information is being posted on the web site, http://www.orovalleyparade.org">www.orovalleyparade.org.
