Golder Ranch Fire District has collected more than 1,000 toys and grocery gift cards for needy children, so many that it is making a donation beyond its borders to the Marines' Toys for Tots program.

The district, with the major donation of $15,000 from the Catalina Crusaders, is distributing toys to more than 400 needy children in Oro Valley, Catalina and Southern Pinal County.

In addition, toys for another 200 children are being given to the Marines for distribution throughout greater Tucson.

"Christmas will be brighter for more kids this year," the district said in a release. The annual toy drive "has been uniquely blessed this season with an outpouring of support from district residents and businesses."

Golder Ranch has sponsored the Toys for Kids program for more than 25 years. On Tuesday morning, firefighters gathered at district headquarters on Golder Ranch Road to prepare toys for donation and giving.

Golder Ranch serves about 65,000 people over 220 square miles in northern Pima County and southern Pinal County, including Catalina, SaddleBrooke and much of Oro Valley.
