The PrimeTime Players of SaddleBrooke offers fans of courtroom dramas the opportunity to be a jurist without spending a day in Florence, Ariz. “The Case of the Steele Deal” allows audience members to determine the outcome of the story from the comfort of their theater seat in the MountainView Clubhouse Ballroom in SaddleBrooke.
Performances are March 31 and April 1 and 2, and 5 to 7. Doors open at 6 p.m. The trial’s “all rise” will be called promptly at 6:30.
Tickets cost $22 and include the play and dessert. They can be purchased at the MountainView Clubhouse, by calling 825-2818 or by visiting www.dvpac.net.
Theatergoers may want to review their “legal briefs” before attending. The case centers on Clara and Sally Steele, identical twins living in SaddleBrooke who were addicted to the lottery. The sisters always split their winnings, that is, until the day Sally ran over and killed Clara’s beloved dogs, Adam and Eve, as she backed out of Clara’s driveway. Afterwards, she showed little empathy for her twin’s losses.
Although Clara and Sally often fought and just as often made up, watching Sally run over Adam and Eve without remorse was the last straw for Clara. She demanded that Sally leave her house and never return.
Then on June 3, 2009, Clara purchased a winning lottery ticket worth $6 million. She refused to share her windfall with Sally, even though they had a written agreement to that effect. On July 4, 2010, Clara passed away. She died a multi-millionaire, and Sally sued her estate.
Will Sally receive a cut of the fortune? That’s up to the “jury.” Seated at tables of 10, audience members listen to the witnesses testimony, hear the attorney’s pleas, and be part of the tension and trauma that will send sparks flying within the “courtroom.” Two huge video screens on stage will display close-up shots of the witnesses to enhance the experience.
The “jury” will have about 20 minutes to deliberate and debate the verdict over dessert.
The play was conceived and written by SaddleBrooke couple Susan and Steve Shear. Previous shows have sold out quickly, so the couple decided to double the number of performances this year to six. The move also enabled the Shears to double-cast the play, providing twice as many SaddleBrooke residents the opportunity to appear on stage.
The cast includes: Ron Andrea, Dianne Ashby, Jim Barrett, Kathie Barrett, Ellie Breitbart, Joan Cohen, Shawne Cryderman, Bernie Gerhard, Susan Gerhard, David Johnson, Leah Kari, Ron Kari, Dee Krull, Carol Merlini, Karen Moore, Mike Moore, Tim Morsani, Marline Rennels, Stephanie Roselle, Kathi Sanders, Susan Sterling, Jane Udowitz, Tina Wrbanek, John Wright and Linda Wright.
“The Case of the Steele Deal” was written, produced and directed by Steve and Susan Shear. Barbara Silvian is its assistant producer/director.
Alex Infald is stage manager while Gin Baber and Dee Krull are in charge of hair and makeup, respectively. Bill Trapp oversees sound.
