Flavor of India
At Oro Valley’s Flavor of India, chicken, lamb, shrimp and fish are presented on a sizzling skillet alongside lamb chops in a curry sauce. Taj Mahal lager beer or a mango lassi are wonderful beverages to accompany these meals. Randy Metcalf/The Explorer

For years, Oro Valley residents have traveled to midtown Tucson to enjoy meals at their favorite Indian restaurant, Gandhi. Now, the same family who owns and operates Gandhi has brought a wide selection of authentic North Indian cuisine to Oro Valley with Flavor of India.

“We have two people who live in Oro Valley who were going to Gandhi for 12 years. Now they’re here every Sunday,” said Harjinder Singh, who co-owns the restaurant with his uncles, Flavor of India’s chefs Mukhtiar Singh and Sadhu Singh. The brothers have cooked together for 20 years, including for Gaylord Indian Restaurant in San Francisco. Harjinder’s father, Tarsem Singh, is the owner and chef at Gandhi.

Flavor of India offers chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetarian dishes and Tandoori clay oven specialties as well as homemade breads and biryanis, which are similar to jambalaya and made with basmati rice.

Since everything is made from scratch, it’s easy for the Singhs to prepare any dish, except the breads, as vegan or gluten-free. Offering the options is just one aspect of Flavor of India’s commitment to providing excellent service.

“We also can adjust the seasonings from mild to crazy hot. We want to make sure everyone leaves happy,” Harjinder said.

Navrattan is the restaurant’s most popular vegetarian selection. A tasty blend of eight vegetables and paneer in curry, its name means “nice jewels.” A vegetarian appetizer sampler ($6.95) includes samosas, spinach pakora, a veggie cutlet and vegetable pakora. A non-vegetarian appetizer platter also is offered.

Diners can top off their meal with a homemade dessert, such as kheer, the Indian version of rice pudding, or kulfi, Indian ice cream in a choice of pistachio or mango flavors.

For those who like variety or have never tried Indian cuisine, Flavor of India offers a daily lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Diners can taste assorted vegetarian and meat dishes, breads, appetizers, salad and dessert for $7.95. Local businesspeople who show their business card will receive $1 off the buffet price.
