Dorothy Vanek, the Northwest resident who has been a leading benefactor for the performing arts, may now be called Dr. Dorothy Vanek.

On May 9, Vanek received an honorary Doctor of Performing Arts degree during the commencement ceremony at College of the Ozarks.

She has taken a special interest in the college's performing arts department, and has graciously made a provision for the furtherance of cultural development in students at College of the Ozarks, according to a release.

Vanek, described as "an avid supporter of the arts," is active with the Tucson Symphony, Southern Arizona Symphony and the Tucson Chamber Artists. She serves on the Oro Valley Foundation Board, Splendido Council, Interfaith Community Services and as a representative of P. E. O. for Cottey College and ESA Foundation for the Western States Council.

Dr. Vanek is originally from Webster Groves, Mo. She was introduced to the college by her parents, who had a long-standing commitment to the institution. College of the Ozarks is located near Branson, Mo. It has the nickname "Hard Work U" because its students work at on-campus jobs rather than pay for tuition, allowing them the opportunity to graduate debt-free. The college has repeatedly been named among the top colleges in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.
